Now Entering Russ's World
Every time technology advances it is not only for the advancement of positive things which are more but also it means an increase in cybersecurity crimes and falsification. It has become too easy nowadays to sit right in your house and interact with the whole world, indeed the world has become a global village. However, the same internet and technology are being used to steal the information, ideas and knowledge of other people inform of infringing the intellectual property rights. Nevertheless, there have been emergences of organizations that have been helping in countering this misconduct. Dr. Kamil Idris is on the forefront of this hottest battle.
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) which is based in Geneva is one organization that’s working hard to ensure globalization does not affect the intellectual property rights. According to Dr. Kamil Idris, who served as the Director General at WIPO, an intellectual right is a tool for enhancing competitive advantage among companies and if they are not protected, it means there is no creator who will give out their ideas.
Despite the laws and penalties set for counterfeiting or pirating ideas, innovations, and knowledge, this internet age seems not to panic or care for any laws. This digital age has made organizations like WIPO face acute issues when it comes to intellectual property rights. Kamil Idris points out that, the difference and the valley that lies between the developed and the undeveloped countries is their application and implementation of their innovations. Still, there are a whole lot of patent applications that wait to process even in developed countries.
Africa seems to still lag behind despite the technology being the equalizer of all countries in the world. Services provided by WIPO can be of help to many Africans to patent their innovations nevertheless, only 2% of patent applications in the world emerge from Africa. Lack of better information could be the issue that’s why Dr. Kamil in his days in WIPO introduced World Intellectual Property Day which is held on April 26 every year.
Kamil Idris was born in Sudan studied at Khartoum University for Law, BA at Cairo University, Masters at Ohio University and his Doctorate at the University of Geneva. He also received Honorary Doctorate from Franklin Pierce Law Center, US and Indira Gandhi National Open University, India.
