Despite the diversity that comprises many companies today, the majority of executive positions are still held by men. Women like Susan McGalla are making strides in changing this situation. Growing up in a male dominated family, she learned early on to work hard to achieve her goals, a work ethnic that she has maintained ever since. When she joined American Eagle Outfitters,the executive positions were held by men. Susan rose through the company, eventually becoming the President before leaving. She is now working for the Pittsburgh Steelers as the Vice President of Business Strategy and Creative Development. Opportunities are not always found for women in business and this issue has been addressed for several years by women’s initiatives and networks. For these to be successful, women in business can support women who are striving to succeed by creating sponsorship opportunities.
A native of East Liverpool, Ohio, Susan McGalla attended Mount Union College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in business and marketing. Before joining American Eagles Outfitters in 1994, she held managerial and marketing positions for the Joseph Horne Company. She has worked as a private finance consultant and served as the chief executive officer of Wet Seal Inc. until 2012. She has been a speaker at events with the Carnegie Mellon University Speaker Series for CEO’s and the Women and Girl’s Foundation of Pittsburgh. She has excelled in working with both men and women, gaining the confidence that has allowed her to succeed. She believes her rise to leadership with American Eagle Outfitters help promote a culture change where both men and women can work together to achieve success.
