Successful Malaysian entrepreneur Vijay Eswaran is a man of remarkable achievements. Eswaran is the executive chairperson of QI, a powerful e-commerce based conglomerate with investments in several sectors including transport, telecommunications, wellness, media and luxury products. The company, which Eswaran cofounded in 1998, has a regional presence in several countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong.
Eswaran was born on October 7, 1960, in Penang, Malaysia. His father Vijayaratnam Saravanamuthu was an official with the country’s ministry of labor. As a result, the family frequently moved during Eswaran’s childhood. Later, Eswaran went to the UK where he joined the London School of Economics (LSE) for a degree in socio-economic studies.
He graduated from the college in 1984 and took up several jobs in Europe, including plucking grapes in France and working at a construction site in Belgium. During his time at the UK, Eswaran was introduced to the binary system.
So profound was the concept to Eswaran that he immediately enrolled for a professional course at CIMA in the UK. Afterwards, he took an MBA at the Southern Illinois University in 1986. Besides studying for his MBA, Eswaran took up part time work with Synaptics, a US multilevel marketing company.
After returning to Malaysia, Eswaran joined the Cosway Group to run their Philippines-based business. He started taking multilevel marketing much more seriously after this time. In 1998, he decided to start his own multilevel marketing company, cofounding what would later become the QI group. Today, the company is one of the fastest growing in the region.
Vijay Eswaran speaks at several forums around the world. So far, he has given talks at the sixth Pravasi Bharatiya in England, as well as the World Economic Forum. Eswaran has also published several popular books, including In the Thinking Zone, a book about his personal management philosophy. The entrepreneur is also interested in charitable activities. So far, he has founded the RHYTHM foundation, QI’s division that is involved in social responsibility. His other charitable organization, Vijayaratnam Foundation, is run by his wife, Umayal Eswaran.
