Now Entering Russ's World
South African police announced on Monday that they are recommending the release of Oscar Pistorius by August 2nd. The Olympian convicted of murdering his girlfriend, will have just served ten months in Jail for Reeva Steenkamp’s death. The parents of Steenkamp made a submission during the parole hearing, but stated they were surprised and grief-stricken to find that Pistorius will only serve 10 months of his original sentence.
On February 14th, 2013, Pistorious shot his girlfriend several times through a bathroom door. The double amputee alleges he didn’t release it was Steenkamp in the bathroom and feared a burglar had broken into the home. Steenkamp died from her injuries.
Pistorious’ legal team argued that the double amputee suffers from anxiety problems associated with his amputation and was not wearing his legs at the time of the murder, making him feel more vulnerable to an attack. They also allege that because Steenkamp was merely visiting the home and didn’t live there, Pistorious had “forgotten” she was in the home at the time of the murder.
Apparently some companies are postulating that the death of Steenkamp ignited a debate about South African politics, and the gun culture that remains so strong in the nation. Violence, robbery and other crimes remain a significant issues in the nation, making many feel like they must carry weapons.
The provisions of Pistorious’ release have not been made public, but he will likely spend the remainder of his sentence on house arrest, according to experts.
