Pharrell and Robin ordered to pay Marvin Gaye’s family

It was amazing to me the news reported in an article on Your text to link… , that Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were ordered to pay such a large fee to Marvin Gaye’s living family members. Sure, I have heard the song ‘Blurred Lines’ and sure it has a flavor of Marvin to me, but in this huge fan’s humble opinion Pharrell is a unique individual with such a wonderful and ‘Happy’ sound. I enjoy Robin, too, but Pharrell’s sound and messages just resonate well with me.

If I was one of Marvin’s relatives I am not sure I would have sued these artists, especially at the ridiculous $25 million they sought stated google play. Even the $7.3 million they were awarded is too much. I must say I agree with Pharrell’s sentiments that the songs share a feeling rather than really infringing on the Marvin Gaye song ‘Got to give it up.’ Nothing against the great Marvin Gaye, he was a master for sure. But unfortunately his family felt ‘Blurred Lines’ blurred the lines of infringement and they sought restitution.

This is a landmark case for musicians. It will be interesting to see if new lawsuits are filed to take advantage of this precedent.
