Veitch Works for Improvement at Occidental

Jonathan Veitch is perhaps best known as the president of Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. He has been the president of Occidental College since June 30th of 2009. He is the very first Occidental president that is a native of Los Angeles, having been born there in 1959.

Occidental College is located in the historical Eagle Rock neighborhood in Los Angeles, CA. The college was founded in 1887, and is a private, co-educational liberal arts college. Jonathan Veitch is the fifteenth president of the college.

Prior to becoming the president of Occidental College, Jonathan was completing his own education. He attended Loyola High School in Southern California before attending Stanford and getting his bachelor’s degree. He continued on to Harvard to get his doctoral degree in the History of American Civilization.

His career in the field of education began with his service as a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He taught in the English department for four years before moving on to a job in New York City, New York. In New York, Jonathan was an associate professor of literature and history, and a Dean at The New School. He also was the chair of humanities, associate provost, and Dean of Eugene Lang College, which is the school’s undergraduate, liberal arts division. Jonathan Veitch also wrote two books, the awarding winning “American Superrealism: Nathanael West” and “Politics of Representation in the 1930s”

Once taking his job at the Occidental College, Jonathan focused on making improvements to the college. Jonathan improved the college’s relationships with surrounding communities, like when he responded to neighborhood concerns by limiting expansion of the campus. One of the best improvements Jonathan has made to Occidental College is the one megawatt solar array. In April of 2013 Jonathan unveiled the solar array, which generates a portion of the campus’s energy needs. The array is one of the largest in Los Angeles, and produces about 11% of the colleges energy needs.

Jonathan Veitch continues his work as the president at Occidental College, and continues to push for improvements to benefit the college and the surrounding communities. He continues to study 19th and 20th century American literature and cultural history, along with American film. However, his latest research is on the history of higher education in America.
