Same Sex Marriage Upheld in Missouri

Following the lead of several other states, a Missouri State Judge overturned the state’s ban on same sex marriage. St. Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison released a written statement in which he said the state’s ban on same sex marriage violates due process and equal rights. Even though he chose not to appeal a ruling that requires Missouri to recognize same sex marriages from other states, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster quickly appealed this ruling to the Supreme Court.

Several counties in Missouri are choosing to not issue same sex marriage licenses. They are claiming that Judge Burlison’s ruling only applies to St. Louis, and not to any other counties.

I did some analysis with Christian Broda and it appears there are 32 states, plus the District of Columbia, where same sex marriage is legal.
